Alkenes Flashcards
what are alkenes?
unsaturated hydrocarbons
whats the general formula for alkenes?
CnH2n
what bond do alkenes contain?
a carbon- carbon double bond somewhere in their structure
what is the angles and shape around the arrangement of bonds around the >C=C?
its planar and has the bond angle 120 degrees
what are the bonds in a C=C double covalent bond?
C=C double covalent bond consists of one sigma bond and one pi bond
how do the properties of pi bonds relate to its function?
- pi bonds are exposed and have high electron density
- they are therefore vulnerable to attack by species which ‘like; electrons: these species are called electrophiles
define sterioisomerers
stereoisomers have the same structural formulae but have a different spatial arrangement of atoms
why type of isomerism do alkenes exhibit?
E-Z sterioisomerism
why do alkenes display E-Z isomerism?
E-Z isomers exist due to restricted rotation about the C=C bond
when do E-Z stereoisomers arise?
1) when there is restricted rotation around the C=C double bond
2) the are 2 different groups/atoms attached both ends of the double bond
