Alkene reactions Flashcards
What does to major product mean?
That this is the product that is mainly formed, more thermodynamically stable so favoured
Do carbons pull or push electrons?
They push electrons towards positives to stabilise them
Why is major product the one that is more substituted?
Alkene reactions
Carbons can push electron density to the positive area therefore stabilising it.
How do you know what will be the major product?
alkene reactions
Will be on carbon that is bonded to the most other carbons since they can push electron density and stabilise the carbon cation formed as an intermediate
What is ether used for in an alkene reaction?
As a solvent to dilute solution and make it easier to handle
Why do you need an acid catalyst to react water with alkenes?
The acid breaks the double bond to form the carbocation
Is water an electrophile or nucleophile?
Nucleophile it attacks positive, it has 2 lone pairs
How does alkene polarise halogen?
polarise means move electron density within the molecule causing induced dipole, the negative of the double bond causes electrons in the halogen to shift creating slight positive and slight negative ( induced dipole)
What is a solvent used for in a reaction?
To dilute and make reaction easier to handle
Example of a solvent and why its used
Ether. used to dilute and make reaction easier to handle
Why is there only trans bromocyclopentane and not cis?
Bromine is such a big group that it blocks the addition of another bromine on the same side, so they can only be added trans
What is the epoxide group?
O
