71 Flashcards
When do reactions occur?
When molecules collide and overcome activation energy barrier When HOMO (nucleophile) overlaps with LUMO (electrophile)
Two key components for a reaction to occur?
Electrons move from HOMO into LUMO so needs to be an energy match
Molecules need to be drawn together by electrostatic forces (charges or dipoles draw to each other)
What is HOMO?
Highest occupied molecular orbital ( nucleophile)
What is LUMO?
Lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (electrophile)
Order the better nucleophiles
lone pair> double bond> single bond
What does filling an antibonding orbital do?
Break the bond
Are pi bonds electrophiles or nucleophiles?
Nucleophiles donate electrons
What is an intermediate?
Formed in one step consumed in another
What is a substitution reaction?
A substituent is replaced with a nucleophile can be one or two step process.
What is a lewis acid?
Electron acceptor
