Alkanes and Alkenes Flashcards
What hydrocarbons are they called?
saturated hydrocarbons because the have no spare bonds
What don’t alkanes do?
turn bromine water colourless
what are the first three alkanes?
methane
ethane
propane
what is the formula for methane?
CH44
What is the formula for ethane?
C2H6
What is the formula for propane?
C3H8
What are alkenes?
chains of carbon atoms with one or more double bonds.
What are alkene hydrocarbons called?
unsaturated hydrocarbons because the have spare bonds.
what do alkenes do?
decolourise bromine water, they then form bonds with bromine atoms
why dont alkanes form polymers?
no spare bonds
why do alkenes make polymers?
because they have spare bonds
how do alkenes from polymers?
they form by opening their double bonds in a long chain.
what are the first two alkenes?
ethene and propene
what is the formula for propene?
C3H6
What is the formula for ethene?
C2H4
