Alkanes, Alkenes and Alkynes Flashcards
hydrocarbons in which the atoms are
connected only by single bonds
Alkanes
For the first 4 alkanes we use the
prefixes
- meth
- eth
- prop
- but
They are colorless, have a characteristic odor and react with halogens in the presence of light, those with 1 to 10 carbons are more reactive
alkanes
uses like: Fossil fuels for heating, Vaseline (ointment, cosmetic, lubricant), diesel
alkanes
uses: “wax” that are used to
coat fruits and vegetables to retain
moisture, Mineral oil.
alkanes
unsaturated hydrocarbons that have at least one
carbon-carbon double bond
alkenes
Nonpolar compounds so they are
not soluble in water
alkenes
uses: raw
material to produce
polyethylene
alkenes
not soluble in water. But they can
be dissolved in benzene,
chloroform, gasoline etc
alkynes
Uses: production of rubber, artificial leather, plastics,
etc
alkynes
unsaturated hydrocarbons that have at least one
carbon-carbon triple bond
alkynes
alkanes that contain a ring of three or more carbons
Cycloalkanes
They are closed chain unsaturated hydrocarbons
that contain at least one double bond.
Cycloalkenes
