Short-term marriage
In Florida, a short-term marriage is a marriage that is lasted 3-9 years, durational alimony may not be awarded for longer thann 50% of the length of a short term marriage.
Moderate Term Marriage
In Florida, a moderate-term marriage lasts 10-19 years, durational alimony may not be awarded for longer than 60% of the length of a moderate term marriage.
Long term Marriage
In Florida a long-term Marriage lasts 20+ years. Durational alimony may not be awarded for longer than 75% of length of a long term marriage.
Permanent Alimony
Permanent alimony was recently abolished in Florida.
Pendente Lite
Temporary alimony is available during litigation to preserve the status quo while divorce is pending.
Bridge-the-Gap Alimony
short-term help to transition from married to independent economic life. This lasts only 2 years and may be awarded as a lump sum. This award is not modifiable.
Rehabilitative Alimony
Awarded to obtain education or training for a set time to become economically self-sufficient, the requesting spouse must submit a concrete plan to support the award. This award is modifiable.
Durational Alimony
Ongoing economic assistance for a limited period of time. The court may extend the term if the need is shown to be necessary by clear and convincing evidence. For determining the years of marriage, the calculation ends when divorce is filed.
Factors for determining Alimony
- standard of living during marriage
- duration of the marriage
- each party’s age and health
- financial resources and all sources of income of each party
- contribution to the marriage
- any factors that will promote equity
