Algebraic proportion Flashcards
What does directly proportional mean?
If one value increases, then the other value also increases, by the same factor. (e.g. if one value doubles, the other value must also double).
If something is directly proportional:
It must be in the form:
y = kx
e.g. y=10x, y=x/10
y ∝ x
y = kx
give an example of an equation of proportionality (directly proportional)
y = 5x
What does inversely proportional mean?
If one value increases, then the other value decreases, by the same factor. (e.g. if one value doubles, the other value must halve).
If y and x are inversely proportional, it must be in the form:
y ∝ 1/x
y = k x 1/x
y = k/x
The equation of proportionality is g=6/h.
How will the value of g change if the value of h is multiplied by 5?
g would be divided by 5.
give an example of an equation of proportionality (inversely proportional)
x = 15/y
What do the interior angles of a polygon with n sides add up to?
180(n-2)
