Algebra Flashcards
How do I multiply powers?
X to the power of 4 × X to the power of 2 = (X × X × X × X) × (X × X) = X to the power of 6
What are powers?
When A letter is multiplied by itself we use powers.
R x R = R to the power of 2
How do I divide powers?
When dividing index expressions, divide numbers and subtract powers.
Eg. P to the power of 6 / P to the power of 2 = P to the power of 4
How do I multiply powers of powers?
When simplifying index expressions with powers of powers , multiply the indices ( powers )
Eg. (X to the power of 3) to the power of 2 = X to the power of 6
What are square roots?
To take the square root of an index expression treat numbers normally but halve powers.
Eg. The square root of 81x to the power of 16 = 9x to the power of 8
How do I expand brackets?
When expanding brackets, each term inside the bracket is multiplied by the term directly outside the brackets.
Eg. 4(X + 2)= 4×X + 4×2 = 4X + 8
How do I expand two sets of brackets?
FOIL = first/outside/inside/last
(X+2) (X+3) = X to the power of 2 + 5X + 6
What are perfect squares?
When two expressions in pairs of brackets are the same, the whole expression is call a perfect square.
What is factorizing?
Factor using is the reverse process to expanding.
4a + 4b = 4(a+b)

If you multiply or divide by a negative number does the sign swap.
Yes an. If your not good with using the signs then change them to equal signs and then change it back to the sign.
