Algae/Light Flashcards
Characteristics of kingdom Plantae?
Photo-autotrophic (synthesize carbs) Eukaryotic Cellulose cell walls Multicellular No mobility Alternation of generations
How do plants get their food?
Convert energy from sun into ATP and glucose
What colour is phylum chlorohyta, why is it useful, and where does it grow?
Green algae
Creates atmospheric oxygen and animals eat it
Grows in shallow water
What colour is phylum phaeophyte, why is it useful, and where does it grow?
Brown algae
Used to make alginic acid (natural thickener - toothpaste, dental impressions)
Grows in mid depth water
What colour is phylum phedophyta, why is it useful, and where does it grow?
Red algae
Has a symbiotic relationship for Cnidarians (provides glucose via photosynthesis in exchange for shelter)
Grows deep
Why does algae need to be aquatic?
Cant dry out
Water provides structural support
Doesn’t need to search for nutrients
Sex cells are dispersed and don’t need to look for them
What is light?
Form of energy that Carrie’s warmth, has waves and particles
Which wavelengths have high/low energy?
High energy = short wavelengths
Low energy = long wavelengths
Why and how do our eyes only perceive certain colours
Light reflects off of objects, and that is the colour we see. Other light is absorbed by those objects. Our eyes have vines and rods that can only perceives certain wavelengths (colours).
What happens to light when it goes through water?
Some light or penetrates water, and it dissipates at different rates due to diff energy levels (red goes first, the orange, yellow, etc). The light is also refracted (bends)
Why is algae diff colours
The different pigments absorb and reflect different light
