Aldehydes and Ketones Flashcards
What is the name of the mechanism for adding CN to a carbonyl
Nucleophilic addition as the carbon atom is delta positive
What is reaction between carbonyls and 2,4-DNPH
All carbonyls react with 2,4-DNPH and produce water as a by-product. This is the test for carbonyls, as it produces a crystalline yellow solid
What is the Tollen’s reagent test
Silver mirror test. Add to aldehydes with heat and a silver mirror will form, no reaction with ketones
What is the Fehling’s solution test
Adding Fehlings solution forms a red-brown precipitate with aldehydes as it has oxidised the copper, but not to ketones
What is the iodoform test
Positive test for any carbonyl group adjacent to a CH3. Usually a test for ketones, but ethanal gives the same result.
