Alcohols and Carboxylic Acids Flashcards
What function group do alcohols have?
-OH group (Hydroxyl)
What types of alcohols are there?
Primary, Secondary and Tertiary
What do primary alcohols oxidise to?
Primary Alcohol - Aldehyde/Alkanals - Carboxylic Acid
What do secondary alcohols oxidise to?
Secondary Alcohol - Ketone/Alkanones
What can be used to oxidise primary and secondary alcohols?
Hot Copper (II) Oxide turns from black -> brown solid
Acidified Potassium dichromate (VI) goes from orange -> blue-green
What functional groups do aldehydes and ketones have?
-C=O (Carbonyl)
Name to oxidising agents that oxidise Aldehydes to Carboxylic Acids and their colour changes.
Fehling’s Solution: blue -> brick red precipitate
Tollens Reagent: colourless -> silver mirror
Acidified Potassium Dichromate: orange -> blue/green
What function group does a carboxylic acid have?
-COOH
