Alcoholic Liver Disease Flashcards
Alcoholic Liver Disease (ALD) manifests…
Into three histological types prevalent in heavy drinkers,in some cases all 3 coexist.
What are the tree histological types prevalent in ALD
Steatosis
Alcoholic Hepatitis
Cirrhosis
Steatosis Definition
Accumulation of lipids in the liver cells due to ethanol metabolism.
Steatosis Prevalence
90 - 100% of heavy drinkers
Steatosis sympotms
Largely asymptomatic
Steatosis Resolution
Typically resolves completely within a few months of alcohol cessation.
Alcoholic Hepatitis cause
Ethanol metabolism generating reactive oxygen species and Neo-antigens, promoting inflammation
Alcoholic Hepatitis prevalence
10-35% of heavy drinkers
Alcoholic Hepatitis Symptoms
can be mild, asymptomatic, or lead to acute flare-ups with signs of multi-organ failure.
Alcoholic Hepatitis complications
acute episodes can lead to multi organ failure
Cirrhosis cause
Prolonger cellular damage generating myofibroblast-like cells, producing collagen and resulting in fibrosis.
Cirrhosis prevalence
8-20%
Cirrhosis symtoms
can be asymptomatic but can induce liver failure due to complications of portal hypertension
Cirrhosis cause cont
as hepatocytes are destroyed, and the liver changes, the hepatic function fails, and increased resistance to portal blood flow causes portal hypertension.
Diagnosis modalities for ALD
Blood tests
Imaging
Ultrasound
