AUD Incidence/Causes
Proximately 15 million Americans have a UD
Alcohol is the most common drug intoxication
Alcohol plays a role in 70% of drug overdoses
Causes are multifactorial including:
Genetics
Alterations and opiate receptors
Neurotransmitter alterations
Psychosocial: poor impulse control, lower level of psychosocial development, low self-esteem
AUD Diagnostics
Use the cage pneumonic screening test
C – “have you ever felt the need to cut down on your drinking? “
A – “have people annoyed you by criticizing your drinking? “
G – “have you ever felt guilty about drinking? “
E - “Have you ever had a drink first thing in the morning to study your nerves or get rid of a hangover? (Eye-opener) “
AUD Management
Consult regarding treatment impossible detoxification
Be direct with diagnosis to patient, “alcohol use disorder “
Tell the patient that he/she has a treatable disease
Make appropriate referrals:
Alcoholics anonymous
Behavioral approaches, rational emotional psychotherapy, psychodrama and Al-Anon teen for a family member
