2
Q

How is methanol poisoning treated?

A

give them alcohol (ethanol) as they are both metabolised by alcohol dehydrogenase

Q

What are the differences in men and womens body is response to alcohol?

13
Q

What is the process of the MEOS (microsomal enzyme oxidase system)?

A

when glucose is low it inhibits to hepatic gluconeogenesis, gives you munchies and diabetes

citric acid cycle (Krebs) switches to anaerobic metabolism so produce lactic acid

fatty acid oxidation is impaired so excess ketogenesis and lipid synthesis and alcohol makes you fat

Q

What is Alcohol ketoacidosis?

A

excess NADG impaired fatty acid metabolism
usually associated with a malnourished state
high ketones but low or normal glucose level

16
Q

What is the role of Antabuse drug?

A

inhibits alcohol dehydrogenase

17
Q

Is alcohol a negative or positive inotrope?

A

negative

18
Q

What is holiday heart?

A

most commonly a supraventricular tachycardia with spontaneous resolution

19
Q

How does alcohol affect the CNS?

A

increases your levels of GABBA which inhibits neurotransmitters, depresses CNS

20
Q

What is the role of ADH?

A

promotes reabsorption of water in the distal tubules of the kidney

21
Q

How does alcohol affect ADH?

A

directly inhibits it so reduced water reabsorption
