3-4 cycles
How are alcohol disorders screened?
FAST Screening test: first 4 questions more than 3 = hazardous drinking and move to: Audit: last 6 questions 8-15 = hazardous drinking 20+ = dependence
How are alcohol disorders treated?
Oral Thiamine for low risk
IM/IV Pabrinex for high risk
What supportive measures can be taken with alcohol disorders?
Nutrition
Hydration
Anti-emetics
Anti-diarrhoeals
When does an alcohol withdrawl take place after last drink?
4-12 hours
When do withdrawl seizures take place after last drink?
6 – 48 hrs
What can withdrawl seizures lead to?
Status Epilepticus
What is Deliruim tremens?
severe confusion, tremors, seizures, sweating
When does DT present after last drink?
3 - 10 days
What treatment can be given for DT?
benzodiazepine + pabrinex
When does Alcoholic Hallucinosis happen?
happens in clear consciousness, full recovery after 6 months of staying away from alcohol, if not it is a psychotic illness
Is DT a medical emergency?
YES! can last a week to a month
What is an Alcoholic Hallucinosis?
Acoustic hallucinations
Delusions
Mood disturbances
(occurs shortly after chronic drinking)
What are the pharmacological measures for relapse prevention?
1st line: acamprosate and naltrexone
2nd line: disulfiram
