Alcohol - How to estimate BAC levels Flashcards
How to estimate BAC levels
How BAC is measured
Drinking an alcoholic beverage will result in its alcohol content being absorbed into the bloodstream. The amount of alcohol in the bloodstream is called Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC). BAC is measured by the amount of alcohol (milligrams) found in 100 milliliters of blood. For example, a person with 50 mg of alcohol per 100mL of blood has a BAC of 0.05 grams per 100 mL of blood (50 mg divided by 100 mL = 0.05 g per 100 mL).
How does BAC charts help us
By showing what happens to BAC levels when a specific number of standard drinks are consumed over a short period of time
What do BAC charts incorporate when determining BAC levels
A persons sex, weight, amount of drinks consumed and time. Time is the most important factor impacting BAC. The more drinks consumed in a shorter period of time, the higher the BAC.
Will BAC continue to rise even after a persons stops drinking
BAC will continue to rise, even after the person stops drinking, because it takes time for alcohol to travel into the bloodstream.
What do BAC charts take in to acount when it comes to elimination
BAC charts also take into account that the body will eliminate alcohol at a rate of approximately one Standard Drink per hour. Elimination rates will vary based on a person’s sex and weight.
In Ontario what does a BAC of 0.05 lead to
license suspension under the highway traffic act
In Ontario a BAc of 0.08 can lead to
criminal offense
