Q

Why is second hand smoke so determental to health and how did it play an important role in policies to reduce somking over time?

A

Second-hand smoke consists of mainstream smoke (exhaled by the smoker) and side-stream smoke (released directly from the end of a burning cigarette). It has at least twice the nicotine and tar as the smoke inhaled by the smoker. Exposure for as little as 8 to 20 minutes can cause the heart rate to increase, the heart’s oxygen supply to decrease, and blood vessels to constrict which increases blood pressure and makes the heart work harder, all physical reactions linked to cardiovascular disease

Q

What are the concerns / trends in relation to youth use of tobacco?

A

Recent concerns with youth include Flavoured Tobacco Use, such as menthol cigarettes, flavoured cigarillos, cigars, shisha, etc., and the use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) or electronic nicotine delivery systems. These devices vaporise a solution that typically includes nicotine, which can harm the developing adolescent brain, affecting attention, learning, mood, and impulse. Furthermore, e-cigarette use in youth has been linked to smoking initiation
