One unit of alcohol is about equal to?
- Half a pint of ordinary strength beer, larger or cider (3-4% alcohol by volume)

The percentage alcohol by volume of a drink equals the number of units in one litre of that drink
Eg
- Strong beer at 6% alcohol by volume has six units in one litre.
So if you drink half a litre (500ml) - just under a pint - then you had three units
For men over 40 and women past menopause, it is thought that drinking a small amount of alcohol (1-2 units per day) helps protect against what?
Heart disease and stroke
Recommended limits of alcohol drinking for men?
Men should drink no more than 21 units of alcohol per week
And no more than 4 units in any one day

Women should drink no more than 14 units of alcohol per week
And no more than 3 units in any one day
Recommended limits of alcohol drinking for pregnant women?
Small amount of alcohol doesnt harm the baby but a large amount does
Exact safe amount is not known
If you do choose to drink when pregnant, then the limit is 1 or 2 units, once or twice a week. (And never get drunk)

- Obesity (alcohol has many calories)
