Alcohol Flashcards
What is alcohol?
Both a chemical and a psychoactive drug. In chemistry - an alcohol exists when a hydroxl group (a pair of oxygen and hydrogen atoms) replaces the hydrogen atom in a hydrocarbon. Alcohols bind with other atoms to create secondary alcohols which are the ones we use every day: methanol, isopropanol, and ethanol.
What type of alcohol can humans safely drink?
Ethanol
What is methanol?
Methyl alcohol is a component in fuel for cars and boats. It is also used to manufacture antifreeze, paint remover, windshield wiper fluid, etc.
What is isopropanol?
Isopropyl alcohol is rubbing alcohol, used for cleaning and disinfecting.
How is ethanol produced?
BY the fermentation of yeast, sugars, and starches.
What is ABV?
Alcohol By Volume. The number of milliliters of ethanol per 100 milliliters in a solution.
What is alcohol proof?
Twice the percentage of alcohol by volume. (Ex: A beverage with 40% ABV will have a proof of 80.)
{Cool fact: The name stems from the days of the American alcohol trade. Alcohol traders were required to mix their alcohol with gunpowder to prove it was legit. If the alcohol caught fire then it was a legitimate product with a high proof.}
What is ABW?
Alcohol By Weight.
