albert dock Flashcards
Questionnaire
Sampling method: Stratified/random sampling. Supposed to question a cross section of men/women, age groups & ethnicity – in reality, asked anyone who would answer.
Sample size: 360 (each person collected minimum of 10)
Description: Asking questions to determine if the urban change had created opportunities.
strengths of questionare
Strengths
-The method is a good way to collect data.
-The data collected can easily be collated
and graphed to show the common opinions of the people.
-They are a cost efficient way of collecting quantitative data.
-They are a practical way to gather people’s opinions.
weaknesses of questionare
Weaknesses
-People may lie especially if they are
given options and their choice is not
there.
-Carrying out face to face questionnaires can be time consuming so a large sample size cannot be obtained in the time.
Method 2: Land Use Survey
Sampling method: Stratified sampling
Sample size: 60 sites/locations
Description: Add the function of the space to a list to establish what facilities are available.
Strengths land use
Strengths
It shows exactly how many different
opportunities are available in the Albert
Dock.
Highlights any empty units
Weaknesses land use
- Needs to be repeated at different times of
year to see if the usage changes.
Can be difficult to establish the unit number
of if the unit has been split.

People/
pedestrian count
Aim: To investigate how well used the Albert Dock is
to establish if opportunities are present
aim Environment
survey
To investigate the impacts of Redevelopment of the Albert
Dock
Method 3: People / predestrian count
Sampling method: Stratified sampling (deliberately chosen location)
Sample size: 1 site (At different times at the new bus stop
Description: Tally the number of people that walk past the different locations to
establish how busy the Albert Dock is.
Method 3: People / predestrian count strength
It shows exactly how many people go
to the different sites at a given time.
Gives figures for how many people
actually use the facilities at the
Albert Dock.
weak pedestrian
Weaknesses
- Needs to be repeated at different times of day/week/year where there would be significant differences in people and amount. (Event on such as a concert )
Can be difficult to count if busy time of day
Method 4: Environmental Survey
Sampling method: Sample size: Stratified –chosen streets
Sample size: 6 locations
Description: to assess the impacts of redevelopment and the evidence of
opportunities provided.
strength environment
Strengths
-The method is a good way to collect
data.
- The data collected can easily be
collated and graphed to show the
common opinions of the class.
weak environemtn
Weaknesses
Perceptions are different – pupils see
the same things differently
Given options the choices are not
pupils own views.
Presentation method: Pie chart questionnaire
Strengths
Very clearly shows % of different views e.g. good, fair etc.
Clearer than bar as bars would be too similar in height given the data
Weaknesses
Does not compare other data collected.
Alternative techniques
Bar chart.
analysis land use
- Land Use Survey
The results suggest that all units where filled suggesting that
regeneration has been successful and there are opportunities
available.
analysis People/ pedestrian
count
- People/ pedestrian
count
High numbers of pedestrians found at specific land marks,
Tate gallery, and entrances highlighting that people are using
the facilities at the Albert Dock therefore Regeneration had
created opportunities.
Environmental
survey analysis
The results show that some areas have more obvious regeneration and maintenance e.g. sign posts seem to be successful in some areas but have more work to do in some areas to improve the quality of provision.
evaluation sample size
Sample size
Sample needs to be done at different times of day, week & year.to
compare weekday, weekend and days when events are
happening e.g. Concert at the M&S bank arena or river of light
festival to compare results.
evaluation bias
Bias
All of the methods were open to some kind of bias. People may
have lied on the questionnaires, pedestrian counts may be
inaccurate – a clicker may be useful to use.
closing statement
It is evident from the results of our data that Redevelopment of the Albert dock has created opportunities e.g. Jobs from the results obtained. However, this data is only valid for this day.
