Q

What four types of monitors must be included w/ outdoor automatic misters or sprayers?

A
  1. wind speed monitors, which will suspend pesticide application when wind speeds are greater than 7 mph (or a lower wind speed specified on product label)
  2. rain monitors, which will suspend application during rainfall exceeding 0.1 inches per hour
  3. thermometers, which will suspend application when ambient temps fall below 50 F
  4. motion detectors, which will suspend application when people/pets are active in the application area
17
Q

Why is monitoring equipment necessary when using automatic sprayers or misters

A

Ambient conditions may become unsafe or not conducive to pest control

18
Q

Residual effects and conditions in AK

A
  1. photo degradation - when pesticides break down into component parts by sunlight
  2. microbial degradation - “” via micro-organisms (bacteria, fungi)
  3. chemical degradation - “” via natural chemical reactions (redox, hydrolysis)
  4. biological degradation - “” via plants, metabolized or neutralized

These processes may slow/cease during AK winter season. Some pesticides can persist in the environment longer than expected. Applicators must consider this effect when choosing products and determining when to apply pesticides

19
Q

Wind conditions in AK

A
  • if no wind speed is listed on label, AK regulations prohibit over 7 mph
  • applicators are responsible for checking wind speeds regularly
20
Q

What are the 3 types of pesticide applications that require a pesticide-use-permit? What is the minimum amount of time it will take to obtain said permit?

A
  1. aquatic - application to a water body (creeks, rivers, streams, ponds, wetlands, and swamps, regardless of who owns the surrounding area)
  2. aerial - application from any type of aircraft or hovercraft, regardless of who owns the land being treated
  3. public project on multiple properties - application to more than one property by a government entity (state, borough, city)
  • permitting process takes a min. of 100 days to complete
  • process requires detailed info about the specifics of proposed pesticide use –> public comment and review period –> (maybe a public hearing) –> back to DEC for more review
  • if a permit is issued, it does not become valid until after a 40 day waiting period to allow public appeal time
21
Q

IPM requirements and pesticide application types

A
  1. state owned land - application on more than 1 acre of state owned or leased land
  2. state right-of-way - application on more than 1 acre of state owned or leased right-of-way

** IPM requirements do not apply to applications on less than one acre of state land or state ROW, to use of antimicrobial pesticides (sanitizers) or personal use insect repellents, or to applications of pesticides inside buildings or structures**
