Airworthiness Considerations Flashcards
Does a airworthiness certificate expire?
Not as long as the inspections are up to date and the aircraft is well maintained in airworthy condition.
Who says we have to follow the POH?
FAR 91.9 “no person may operate a civil aircraft without complying with the operating limitations specified in the approved flight manual.”
Who is responsible for determining if an aircraft is airworthy?
The PIC
Who is responsible for ensuring an aircraft is maintained in an airworthy condition?
The owner/ operator
Can a pilot perform maintenance on a plane?
1) Yes, if the maintenance is performed under the supervision of an authorized aircraft mechanic, who signs off the work.
2) You can also perform preventative maintenance unsupervised.
What is an Airworthiness Directive? Is it mandatory?
1) An AD is a FAA issued order to fix a known issue.
2) It is mandatory.
What different kinds of AD’s are there?
1) Emergency- These require immediate compliance before flight.
2) One time- After the AD is complied with once, there is no further need to address the specified issue.
3) Recurring- This AD must be complied with at the specified interval.
AV1ATE
Annual- every 12 months
VOR- every 30 days for IFR
100 hour if plane is for hire
Altimeter/Pitot Static- 24 months; required for IFR
Transponder- 24 months
ELT- 12 months
Who can perform an annual?
Only an aircraft mechanic with inspection authorization (IA) can sign off on an annual.
Can you over fly an annual? 100 hour?
1) You cannot overfly an annual without first obtaining a special flight permit.
2) You can over fly a 100 hour by up to 10 hours if its to take the plane to have its 100 hour inspection performed.
When does an ELT battery have to be replaced or recharged?
1) After 1 hour of cumulative use.
2) Once 1/2 of the battery useful life has been used.
