🫁 Airway & Respiratory Systems Flashcards
Inspiration
When the diaphragm and intercostal muscles contract allowing air to enter the lungs
Expiration
The process of breathing out, during which the diaphragm and intercostal muscles relax.
Gas Exchange
The exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the lungs during breathing.

What does the trachea do?
The trachea, or windpipe, carries air from the throat to the bronchi.
Bronchi
The bronchi are large airways that branch from the trachea into each lung.
Bronchioles
Bronchioles are smaller branches of the bronchi that lead to the alveoli.
Alveoli
Alveoli are tiny air sacs where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged with the blood.
Capillaries
Capillaries are tiny blood vessels where the exchange of gases, nutrients, and waste products occurs between blood and tissues.
Pulminary Ventilation
The mechanical process of moving air into and out of the lungs for gas exchange.
Internal Respiration
The exchange of gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide) between the blood and the body’s tissues.
External Respiration
The exchange of gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide) between the air in the lungs and the blood.
