  • to facilitate removal of secretions
  • long term mechanical ventilation
  • to permit oral intake & speech in vented pt’s

Air is inserted into the cuff
-pt's is at risk of aspiration
-pt's requires mechanical ventilation
-pressure should not exceed 25cm H2O
- can deflate the cuff to clean secretions
