airway obstruction Flashcards
1
Q
types of airway obstruction
A
Complete obstruction= medical emergency partial obstruction= usually aspiration food foreign body laryngeal edema allergic reaction cns depression laryngeal/tracheal stenosis(narrowing)
2
Q
Airway obstruction sign and symptoms
A
stridor-a sound that can't breath use of accessory muscles suprasternal/intercostal retractions wheezing restlessness tachycardia cyanosis prompt assessment & tx: heimlich maneuver
3
Q
Tracheotomy
A
a surgical incision into the trachea for the purpose of establishing an airway.
4
Q
Tracheostomy
A
The stoma(opening) that results form the Tracheotomy.
5
Q
indications of tracheostomy/tracheotomy
A
- to bypass an upper airway obstruction
- to facilitate removal of secretions
- long term mechanical ventilation
- to permit oral intake & speech in vented pt’s
6
Q
inflated cuff tube
A
type of tracheotomy tubes Air is inserted into the cuff -pt's is at risk of aspiration -pt's requires mechanical ventilation -pressure should not exceed 25cm H2O - can deflate the cuff to clean secretions
7
Q
Cuffless tube
A
type of tracheotomy tubes
- used when pt does not require mechanical ventilation
- tubes replaced PRN
- first time by physician
8
Q
Tracheostomy Care
A
- Suction PRN
- sterile technique
- every shift
- PRN as patients request
