Air Traffic Services Flashcards
What 3 simplified parts are there to Air Traffic Services that are provided by Nav Canada?
Area Control Centers (ACC)
Terminal Control Units
Control Towers
See picture for Towers, Terminals, and ACCs diagram
What is a Terminal Control Service?
A service provided by ACCs to IFR and CVFR flights operating within specified control areas
ATC is mainly for collision prevention and that takes priority over flight information services. Who should you call for flight info?
Flight Information Centers (FICs)
There are 4 in Canada as of 2022. Quebec, London, Edmonton, Kamloops
Where does 1-866-WX-BRIEF send you?
To the nearest FIC to talk to an FSS, depending on where you are. There are 4 as of 2022. Quebec, London, Edmonton, and Kamloops
What do FICs (1-866-WX-BRIEF) provide to pilots?
Weather briefings and flight planning services with a flight service specialist (FSS)
What FIC oversees Atlantic Canada?
London FIC (it is split into two)
Each FIC has a physical building, but they also have sub-stations. What are these sub-stations?
Flight Service Stations (FSS) manned by Flight Service Specialists (FSS) that give advisory services to pilots at airports that are busy enough to benefit from such a service but not so busy as to need a tower. Will always be Class E control zones and be addressed as ‘Radio’
What kinds of services do Flight Service Stations provide?
Flight Information En-route (FISE)
-Wx info: SIGMET/AIRMET/PIREP/METAR/SPECI/TAF/ALT Setting/ weather rador/lightning info and briefing update
-Aeronautical info: NOTAM, RSC, CRFI, MANOT, etc
-Relay of communications with ATC: IFR clearances and SVFR Authorization
-En-route AC may submit to an FIC: PIREPs, Position reports (including arrival and departure times), revised flight plan
***They will not give traffic info, as they are not controllers
Because Canadian Airspace has gotten congested, 126.7 is, in many places, for listen only. What are now the four main FISE requencies that you should monitor when not flying under flight following, depending on where you are?
123.275
123.375
123.475
123.55
How do you know on a map what the FISE frequency is and which ACC is providing it?
What is a UNICOM (not a AU UNICOM)
An air to ground communication facility operated by a private agency that provides private advisory station services to AC in **uncontrolled* aerodromes.
Employed at airports with low traffic volume and where, typically, there is no control tower. Not trained on wx or anything else.
Most UNICOM frequencies are also ATFs and are typically 122.35, 122.7, 122.725, 122.775, 122.8, 122.825, 122.95, 123.0, 123.3, 123.35
When ATC gives me a clock position of another aircraft, what is that position based on in relation to me?
Controlllers can only see our track, not our heading. So their position report is based on my track.
Though I may be tracking directly North, I could be crabbing into the wind. If the controller tells me there is an AC at my two o’clock, and I am crabbing to the left, it may actually be at my 3 or 4 o’clock
Wake turbulence is not only an issue during arr and dept procedures. When else should caution be exercised?
Whenever a flight is conducted anywhere behind, and less than 1000ft below, a larger airplace of helicopter
For non-radar departures, what are the wake turbulence separation provided by ATC?
Two minutes behind any heavy AC
ATC will give wake turbulence advisory to light AC departing behind medium AC. If the pilot is not comfortable with this, they can request more time.
