Air Polloution Flashcards
What’s the equation for complete combustion
Hydrocarbon + plenty of oxygen —-> water + carbon dioxide
What 2 pollutants does incomplete combustion form
Particulates (soot)
Carbon monoxide
When does incomplete combustion occur
When there is not encouru oxygen available
What are problems with particulates (soot)
If inhaled they can get stuck in your lungs and damage them (respiratory problems)
Cause smog (reflects sunlight back into space contributes to global warming)
What are problems with carbon monoxide
- If we breath carbon monoxide it diffused into our blood and binds to Haemoglobin- can carry less oxygen
Therefore less oxygen gets transported round the body - it’s colourless and odourless (hard to detect)
What are causes of carbon monoxide poisoning
Fainting
Coma
Death
How are sulfur dioxides produced
When hydrocarbons are burned they can have impurities eg sulfur
which then gets oxidised to firm sulfur dioxide
How are nitrogen oxides formed
Nitrogen and oxygen from the air react together
(Doesn’t normally happen as it requires really high temperatures)
Problems with both sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides
When breathed in they damage our lungs (respiratory problems)
As they mix with clouds they dissolve form dilute sulfuric/nitric acid (acid rain)
What does acid rain do as it falls
Damages buildings and statues
Corrodes metals
Damages plants
