Air Monitoring Flashcards
Does air monitoring indicate exact concentrations?
No it doesn’t give exact atmospheric conditions/contaminant concentrations
What is often not detected by air monitoring?
Numerous less-common hazardous contaminants/conditions may exist in various combinations and may not be detected by air monitoring
This will produce a more representative sampling
Wide scanning
Firefighters must not only rely on air monitoring, they must also be aware of
Physical signs
When available use more than one
Drager multi gas monitor
Can air monitoring be solely used to determine all IDLH atmospheres?
No!
Personnel conducting air monitoring shall use at least the follow PPE
SCBA and full firefighting turnouts and gloves
Until air monitoring occurs personnel should follow this guideline
Operational guideline 4.1 use of respiratory EQT
If IC had any questions they can consult with?
HAZMAT team or HC458 for advice
Give examples of possible conditions that cause hazardous atmospheres and might need air monitoring
Fires, chemical or biological agent releases, confined spaces and overhaul operations
Air monitor should be conducted under these six circumstances
Structure fire or enclosed fire, HAZMAT releases, physical hazards (choking, strong odors), confined space ops, salvage and overhaul, when directed by IC, ISO, and other PFR authorities
Periodic air monitoring should be conducted when there is possibility of
Oxygen deficient, explosive, flammable, or toxic atmosphere
LEL >.5% vol
Withdraw and evaluate further
Oxygen <19.5 or >23
Don SCBA and withdraw
CO 35ppm+
Don SCBA
