retribution based on idea of punishment where offender deserves to be punished - society’s revenge based on proportionality “eye for an eye”. judge passes sentence proportional to offence in which punishment fits crime - tariff sentences based on idea of proportionality.
reduction of crime
deters individual offenders from reoffending, severe penalties given so will reconsider acting due to fear of punishment; deters society from committing offences as they see harsh sentences which deters others from committing same offence
reform/rehab
stops reoffending as it’s a forward-looking aim; alters behaviour so don’t commit crimes in further (children - youth detention centres)
public protection
public should be protected from dangerous offenders. dangerous driver given driving bans which protects road users and pedestrians. offenders presenting significant risk to society are sent to prison which prevents committing further offences
reparation
given to those affected by offenders, looks to give something back to victim as offender ordered to pay compensation or make restitution; also includes reparation to society
