Aims and Hypothesis Flashcards
Null hypothesis
There is no relationship between the two variables being studied
Results are due to chance and are not significant in terms of supporting the idea being investigated
Alternative hypothesis
The hypothesis states there is a correlation between two variables
Results not due to chance
Non directional hypothesis
The independent variable will have an effect on the dependent variable, but the direction of the effect is not specified
e.g there will be a difference in how many numbers are correctly recalled by children and adults
Directional hypothesis
One tailed
Predicts the nature of the effect of the independent variable on the dependent variable
e.g adults will correctly recall more words than children
Aim
What the researcher intends to investigate, the purpose of the study
Hypothesis
A clear precise testable statement that states the relationship between the variables to be investigated
Operationalisation
Clearly defining variables in terms of how they can be measured
