Aims And Hypotheses Flashcards
What is an aim?
A general statement about what the research is trying to establish.
What is a hypothesis?
A specific testable statement which predicts the findings?
What would an aim start with?
An investigation into…
When is directional used?
If previous research has been conducted in that area.
When is non-directional used?
In new areas of research - unable to anticipate results.
What is the template for an experimental hypothesis?
Those participants who (half IV) will (op DV - directional ‘score higher/lower’ non directional - ‘score differently’) than those participants who (other half of IV)
What does it mean to say a hypothesis should be operationalised?
Must have clear measurements.
What is the template for a null hypothesis?
There will be no difference (op DV) between (half IV) and (other half of IV)
What is an experimental hypothesis?
Predicts that the IV will affect the DV and so there will be difference in the groups.
What is a null hypothesis?
States that there will be no difference - one variable won’t affect the other.
What is a directional hypothesis?
Tells you the direction the results will go in.
What is a non-directional hypothesis?
States that there will be a difference but doesn’t say what.
