Aims and Hypotheses Flashcards
An aim
A general statement of what the researcher intends to investigate.
The purpose of the study.
A hypotheses
A clear, precise, testable statement that states the relationship between the variables to be investigated.
Two types of hypotheses
Directional- State the direction of the difference or relationship
More, less, increase, decrease
Non-directional-Does not state the direction of the difference or relationship.
When to use directional or non-directional hypotheses
Directional- When the findings of previous research studies suggest a particular outcome.
Non-directional- When there is no previous research, or findings from earlier studies are contradictory.
Alternate and Null Hypotheses
Alternate hypotheses= A hypotheses states there will be a difference (Directional/Non-directional)
Null hypotheses= A hypotheses that states there will not be a difference and if there is a small difference, it is due to chance.
