AIDS Flashcards
AIDS effects
T cells
b cell
antibody mediated immunity
t cell
cell mediated immunity
parts of immune system
b cell, t cell, phagocytic mechanisms, complement system
t cells
cytotoxic, helper, inducer, suppressor
cytotoxic t
kill foreign and infected cells
helper t
recognize foreign cells and help active b cells and cytotoxic t
inducer t
induce the development of t cells
suppressor t
feedback
AIDS effects..
T4: helper and inducer
T8
cytotoxic and suppressor
T4
amplify response to infection, regulate t cell proliferation, help mediate cytotoxic and suppressor cell function and helps b cells produce antibodies
effects helper and inducer
delayed hypersensitivity rxn
decreased lymphocytes, decreased macrophage activity, decreased cytotoxic t cell function
AIDS primarily targets
helper t cells
pneumocystis cariniipneumonia
airborne, opportunistic infection of lungs that occurs in 60% of AIDS pt; mortality of 50-60% with repeat infections; doesn’t effect immuno-competent; attaches to alveolar walls, reproduces in alveolar spaces, right to left shunting, increased fluid; looks like ARDS; not always bilateral; shouldn’t have an initiating event; low grade fever
