Intended effect:
Priestley wants the audience to take responsibility for their own actions and to take care of the whole of society
In 1912, there was no welfare state for the poor. Priestley was expressing the need for change in society
“I blame the young man who was the father”
she passes blame unknowingly onto Eric and then tries to hypocritically cover up the issue
“Each of you helped to kill her”
Priestley want to make it clear that all the family are responsible
“One Eva Smith has gone - but there are millions and millions and millions of Eva Smiths and John Smiths still left with us”
There are still many people out there in similar situation, Priestley want to show how large this issue is
