Why were MATs introduced?
MATs made farming more efficient and introduced the idea of communism.
How did they work? How many families?
There were 10 or less households which shared resources and equipment.
How did peasants feel about MATs?
They were fine. It brought extended family together.
How widespread were MATs?
By 1952, 40% of the population lived in MATs.
When did Mao introduce Agricultural Producers Co-Operatives (APCs)?
1953
Why were APCs introduced?
It gave poor peasants access to richer peasants property. It further introduced the idea of sharing which was influenced by Communism.
What was the difference between an APC and a ‘higher’ APC?
An APC held 30-50 households while a ‘higher’ APC help 200-300 households.
How did peasants feel about APCs?
They were unpopular, peasants did not want to share their newly acquired land.
How widespread did APCs become?
Originally, in June 1955, only 15% of the population lived in APCs but by January 1956 80.3% lived in them.
