What is an agent of socialization?
It is people and institutions that shape a persons social development, it provided us with formal and informal training from childhood for the rest of your life
How do families play a primary role in socialization?
- Guide you how to think, speak, and behave
- You begin to internalize norms, beliefs and values
- Reinforce your gender roles
- Nurture your capacity for intimate, and social
relationships - Help you create your first self-image
What does family socialization differ on?
- Social or economic class of parents
- Parenting style
- Preparedness of parents for the parenting role
- Psychological health of parents
- Family type ( single parents, dynamic family, full-house)
How do schools play a secondary role in socialization
It is the first place that children are surrounded by adults who are not family.
- Transmit academic curriculum (Things that you are
thought by your teachers)
- Transmit “hidden” curriculum (what you are leaning, by things that you participate in)
Ex: sharing, obedience, teamwork
Why are peer groups secondary agents of socialization
They are pronounced during adolescence, and it is a guide for self-direction, you are also exposed to more social ideas that may stand in the way of your families thoughts
Why is media a secondary agent of socialization
Because there are Tv’s, radios, books, social media, internet, magazines etc.
Media can both have negative and positive effects.

Basic, social accepted goals, Roles and behaviour
Basic Skills
Learning how to brush your teeth, (Body Care)
Socially accepted Goals
socialized by social goals that are seen as acceptable

Roles that we should take on and how we should behave in different social situations
What is a feral child
A young child abandoned by family, left in the wild to be taken care of by animals, most often dogs
What is an isolated child
A child left isolated with little to no communication within human contact.
Transmit academic curriculum
Teaches us things in the curriculum such as math science etc
Hidden academic curriculum
A behind the scenes preview of what we learn hands-on in our classrooms like diligence, hard work, love, sharing
