Agencies of Socialisation - Education Flashcards
what is socialisation through education?
education is secondary socialisation picks up from primary socialisation offered by parents and develops it
- teaching more complex skills than children will ever learn at home
- offers universalistic socialisation compared to particularistic socialisation you get a home
- schools tries to socialise you into more universal values and norms found throughout society
examples of socialisation through education?
- PSHE (personal health and social education)
- teaching british values
- schools discipline children = detentions and exclusion but also have reward systems = training you to behave
EVAL of education as an agency of socialisation - functionalist view
sometimes concern when schools conflict with family but do think that school teaches importance of universalistic values
EVAL of religion as an agency of socialisation - marxism view (bowles and gintis)
Bowles and Gintis 1976 argue school passes on capitalism ideology
point out 3 things about schools that they encourage children to accept
1. Accept hierarchy –> idea that some people are just their superiors who can’t be questioned
2. Value external awards –> grades and marks/gold stars rather than enjoying things for its own sake
3. Fragmentation of knowledge –> into lots of different subjects, prepares you for working in a capitalist workforce
EVAL of religion as an agency of socialisation - feminists view
concerned that schools channels boys and girls into different subjects and careers
- usually sending boys into prestigious subjects and better paid careers
- they can detect patriarchal ideology in the curriculum and uniform
