Who were the ‘Big Three’ and what did they want from the treaty?
-Woodrow Wilson(US president): ‘Fair and lasting peace’ and wanted his Fourteen points implemented to achieve this. He wanted the armed forces of all nations reduced even the winners and the League of Nations created to ensure peace.
-Georges Clemenceau(French Prime Minister): Wanted Germany to pay including being stripped of land, industry and armed forces. Also wanted heavy reparations.
-Llyod George(British Prime Minister): Agreed with Woodrow Wilson but was affected by public opinion which agreed with Clemenceau.

-Alsace Lorraine, captured by Germany in 1870, was returned to France
-The Saar which was a important German coalfield given to France for 15 years after which ownership would be determined by a plebiscite

-A League of Nations was to be created to prevent further world conflict. The League’s home was in Geneva, Switzerland. It was based on a covenant, a set of rules which all members agreed to follow.
-Aims: to discourage aggression; to encourage co-operation in business and trade; to encourage nations to disarm and to improve living and working conditions of people in the world.
-The most important aspect of the covenant was Article 10 – which translates to collective security. Members would act together to prevent war and defend all nations.
