Define the belief in ‘Manifest Destiny’
America had a moral duty and right to acquire new lands, and to impose it’s political, social and economic systems on other people.

•New England: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode island and Vermont.

•Contain: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota Wisconsin.
-its the ‘breadbasket’ of America, and it’s the most productive agricultural region.
What states does the Southwest contain and what was it’s importance?
•Contains: Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas
-Significant population of Native Americans and Mexicans in this largely desert region.
What states does the West contain and what was it’s importance?
•Contains: Colorado, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
-importance: Opened to settles after Civil war with the Homestead Act promising free land to anyone who could farm it and development of railways stimulated expansion.
What two states are separated from these regions?

When was the Democratic party established, (and Republican) what were their beliefs and how have they changed?
•Democratics: 1792, conservative, believed in small government and that the states should have more power than the federal government and that slavery shouldn’t be abolished.
•Republicans: believed in the opposite.
-Republicans have become more conservative while Democratics are more progressive
Why did the Civil War begin?
-The Federal government resisted introduction of slavery in new states
-Slave states united forming the Confederacy of the United States seperating from the Union in 1861 causing the war
Who, what and when freed slaves in captured territories?
President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on 1 January 1863
