What was the Middle Passage?
The Middle Passage was the route of sea going journeys of millions of Africans taken from their Native land, to the shores of the Caribbean and America, where they were invariably destined to an existence of institutional slavery. The journey was one of the most horrific aspects of the morally deplorable system of slavery.
The Middle Passage itself lasted roughly 80 days on ships ranging from small schooners to massive, purpose-built “slave ships.”
Middle Passage Conditions
- Shackled to the person next to them
- Packed like cargo, over-packed since a fifth of the slaves were expected to die.
- They sat in their own feces, unsanitary conditions
- DEATH
epidemics, diseases like scurvy and yellow fever, small pox…little to no ventilation.
-DIET
They ate rice, porridge, yams, oil and fruits to fight scurvy (deficiency in vitamin c).
