How did Colonialism in Rwanda create more tension btw the Hutus and Tutsis and lead to genocide later?

  • Separated Tutsis and Hutus through power- First Germany gave power to the Tutsi’s because of their light skin, however when the Belguins took Rwanda, they gave the Hutus power
  • ID Cards were established to discern between Hutu and Tutsi
  • By implementing cash crops it isolated the economic system- allowing them to blame it on the Tutsis
  • Hutu President plane shotdown which led to the genocide (radios)

  1. Nelson Mandela was the leader of the ANC who was arrested for opposing apartheid, 30 years later became president of South Africa (SA)
  2. Sharpeville demonstration- organized passbook burning. SA police killed 69 people
  3. ANC- political party opposed to apartheid. banned because of its views. Rallied the Sharpeville Demonstration

Short Term
* homelands- blacks had less land
* Passbooks- controlled the movement of blacks
Long Term
* People can’t get out of poverty
* Those who were barely educated can’t educate others
* White land had to be split up

* alllowed people to tell their story in order to heal and move forward
