Indirect rule in practice
British monitored effort and paid them a fixed salary, this latter gave the British limited control over tax collection compared to France. he payment of a fixed wage gave chiefs an incentive to collect as much taxes as possible and at the same time keep much of the collected revenues in his own pockets.
