Afraid to do / Afraid of -ing
We use “afraid to do” for things we do int_____; we can ch___ to do them or not.
We use “afraid to do” for things we do intentionally; we can choose to do them or not. (être effrayé à l’idée de faire quelque chose)
This part of town is dangereous. People are afraid to walk here at night. (quand elles choisissent de le faire)
James was afraid to tell his parents what happened. (s’il choisit de le faire)
Note: idée de mouvement vers (intention de…); la peur est anticipée à l’idée de faire une action donnée (cause subjective)
We use afraid of something happening when it is p_____ something bad will happen (accident).
