Originally developed as part of the USDE Career Clusters project in 2003
National AFNR Career Content Standards, Revised 2015
Provide state agricultural education leaders and educators with high-quality, rigorous set of standards to guide what students should know and be able to do after completing a program of study in each of the AFNR Career Pathways
What are some key details of the 2015 revision?
- Reflect essential and up to date knowledge and skills that students need for career success
- Provide a sound basis upon which to design AFNR related CTE courses
- Provide a sound basis for developing end of course/program assessments
Agribusiness Systems
Also known as ABS. Study of agribusiness and their management. Students demonstrate competence in application of principles and techniques for planning, development, application, and management of ABS

Farm investments, economists, rural appraiser
Animal Systems
AS. Study of animal systems including content areas such as life processes, health, nutrition, genetics, livestock, etc.
Sample careers in AS
Veterinarian, animal nutritionist, meat science researcher, feedlot specialist
Biotechnology Systems
also known as BS. Study of using data and scientific techniques to solve problems concerning living organisms with an emphasis on applications to AFNR

Geneticists, microbiology, lab technician, plant scientist
Environmental Systems
Also known as ESS. Study of environmental systems, instruments, and technology used to monitor and minimize the impacts of human activity on environmental systems

Hazardous material handler, naturalist, solid waste manager
Food Products and Processing Systems
Also known as FPP. Study of food and safety sanitation, nutrition, biology, microbiology, chemistry, and human behavior in local and global food systems.

Food scientist, meat processor, food inspector, nutritionist
Natural Resource Systems
Also known as NRS. Study of the management, protection, enhancement, and improvement of soil water, wildlife, forests, and air as natural resources.
