1978 April - pro soviet government takes over afghanistan and receives money from the US
1978 sep- Amin takes over the government, removing soviet supporters and asked the USA for assistance
1979 dec- USSR invade Afghanistan claiming Amin invited them
1979 dec- Amin was assassinated and replaced by Babrak Kamal
1980 jan- Carter promises to defend all countries in the Persian gulf and begins sending aid to Afghanistan
