Symptoms
Psychological sphere- Change in mood depression, anxiety, perplexity, anhedonia Change in thought content guilt hopelessness neurotic sympomatology-agoraphobia ideas of reference Physical sphere- change in bodily function energy sleep appetite libido constipation change in psychomotor functioning agitation retardation Social Sphere loss of interests irritability apathy withdrawal loss of concentration, registration& memory
Delusion
Strong belief in something despite evidence of the contrary
somatic syndrome
anhedonia waking 2 hrs before normal time worse in the morning psychomoto agitation loss of appetite weight loss loss of libido can occur without low mood
Mild depression diagnosis
two core symptoms -depressed mood - anhedonia - feeling fatigued further two symptoms -appetite change -loss of confidence Moderate- more symptoms at least 6 severe- at least 8

SCID (structured clinical interview for DSM disorders)
SCAN (Schedules of Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry).
Mania
with or withoutpsychotic symptoms (delusions & hallucinations) elevated mood pressured speech disinhibition grandiosity alteration of senses extravagant spending
Hypomania
no psychotic symptoms
lesser degree
not to extent of severe disruption or social rejection
treatment for mania
antipsychotics
mood stabilisers
lithium
ect
bipolar disorder
diagnosis 2 or more episode of depression and mania or hypomania
if no depression the diagnosis is hypomania or bipolar disorder
early onset usually +ve Family history
