AFCS Flashcards
What is the steepest angle for approaches?
3.5º without AFM supplements
What is the function of the FPV cage switch on the control wheel?
Allows the pilot to laterally center the FPV and guidance cue should the FPV and cue be displayed at their limiting region on the PFD
How will the aircraft react when the EDM is active?
FD will command a descent to 15,000ft, 90º left turn, AT will target VMO-10kts until 15,000ft, then 250kts
What does Vate indicate on the speed tape?
Lowest speed the AT or flight guidance will allow
What is the speed limitation for FLC mode use?
Above 0.85M is prohibited
When must both STALL PUSHER switches be on?
For duration of flight
When is the ILS automatically tuned by the FMS?
30nm direct distance to the airfield
On the ground, which two parameters are required for either AT engage switches to function?
Airspeed less than 60kts, throttle levers are above 23ºTLA
When is the FMS prohibited as a sole NAV source for instrument approaches?
Localizer-based approaches, VOR approaches, NDB approaches
Note: VOR and NDB approaches require a bearing pointer displayed in addition to FMS guidance
How does the FD respond during climb-out when TOGA is selected during both basic and FMS-assisted go-arounds?
Basic: in green navigation, it holds the current heading in a wings-level mode and maintains a pitch from
10° minimum to 20° maximum changing to ALTS at the MAP altitude FMS-assisted: during an ILS/GPS approach, GA changes to FMS NAV and VNAV at 400 feet AGL
Note: Half bank is not available for use
during a missed approach
What will happen if the yaw damper is disengaged with the AP engaged?
AP will disengage
When is the AT T/O HOLD control mode activated?
On the ground above 60kts, or in-flight below 400ft AGL
What are the four purposes of the MSTR DISC pushbutton on the control wheel?
- Disconnect the AP
- Silence a disconnect aural
- Interrupt pitch trim while held
- Inhibit the stick pusher while held (non-EASA aircraft)
What does the AP do in ROLL mode?
Hdg hold when the bank is less than 5º. Holds the current bank angle if the bank is greater than 5º to a max of 30º
During an ILS APP, when does the independent APP mode of the AFCS occur?
GS capture
What is the min height at which the AP can be engaged?
400ft AGL
What is the max altitude for flight with the YD disengaged?
41,000ft
How does the AP engage if no vertical or lateral FD modes are armed?
Basic ROLL and FPA modes
What is the FD “pitch target box” command for a normal takeoff?
Initially set to 17.5º and can move between 11.5º to 20º to hold the selected speed
How is the take-off mode cleared?
Engaging the AP, selecting another vertical mode, pressing the TCS button
What will cause automatic disengagement of the AP?
Unusual attitude, stall warning activation, activation of WS avoidance (2 sec delay)
What does a flashing/steady amber LIM in the AT mode annunciation indicate?
Flashing LIM: an airspeed target deviation is sensed
Steady LIM: structure limit, minimum speed limit, or a maximum power limit
What occurs when the EDM is manually selected above FL250?
FD will command a descent to 15,000ft, a left turn 90º, AT will target VMO-10kts or MMO-0.02 until 15,000ft, then 250kts
What is required for an auto Nav-to-Nav transfer to occur?
Lateral mode is FMS, aircraft has captured the desired LOC, APPR button on the FCP is selected
What will happen in the event the master AFCS/AT fails?
Standby AFCS/AT automatically takes over and the FD modes will revert to basic ROLL and FPA
When is the LOC preview mode enabled?
Automatically at 30nm
What is the minimum height that the AP can be used for a non-precision APP with vertical path reference?
160ft AGL
How is the A/T GA mode cleared?
Select another vertical mode
When does the AFCS initially engage the yaw damper?
Automatically when a remote electronics unit (REU) and two sources of roll and yaw are available from the IRS
Which parameters are used to calculate the Vate (min manoeuvring speed) value?
IAS, flap position, and stall data
What is the FD “pitch target box” command during take-off after an engine failure?
Initially set to 13º and moves between 8º and 13º to maintain the selected speed
How are active/armed FD and AT modes indicated on the FMA?
Active displays in GREEN, armed displays in WHITE
Prior to what speed must the AT be verified engaged and take-off thrust verified set?
60KIAS
Does the indicator light on the FCP indicate that the associated mode is currently active?
No, the pilot must confirm mode status or operation from the FMA on the PFD
How is the AFCS 1 manually selected to AFCS 2?
Selecting the AFCS 1/2 switch on the RSP
How is the EDM cancelled?
Disengage the AP
What happens to the AP/FD modes during a WS warning?
Escape guidance is provided via the guidance cue, AT and vertical modes indicate WSHR, thrust setting is TO EPR, AP disconnects after a 2-sec delay
What are the three conditions to automatically activate the EDM?
AP engaged, altitude above 25,000ft, cabin alt exceeded 14,500ft
What is the bank angle for half bank?
17º
What is the min height that the AP can be used during a CAT I or CAT II precision APP (ILS)?
80ft AGL
When is the “pitch target box” removed?
Removed upon selection of any vertical mode
When does the AT transition to the retard mode?
Aircraft in landing config, RADALT of 50ft AGL
How is the master AFCS identified?
FCP indicator lights adjacent to the YD and AP buttons
What is the min height that the AP can be used during a non-precision APP with no vertical guidance?
