Aerobic Respiration Flashcards
What are chemical reactions inside the cells controlled by?
Enzymes
What is aerobic respiration?
Respiration that uses oxygen
What does the chemical reaction that takes place for aerobic respiration use?
Glucose and oxygen
Aerobic respiration takes place continuously in…
Plants and animals
Where does most aerobic respiration take place?
In the mitochondria
Glucose + Oxygen ->
Carbon dioxide + water (+ energy)
What happens to the energy released by aerobic respiration?
It’s used by the organism
List 3 ways that animals use the energy released
To build larger molecules from smaller ones, muscle contraction, maintain a steady body temperature
List 2 ways plants use the energy released
To build larger molecules from smaller ones, to build sugars, nitrates and other nutrients into amino acids that are built up into proteins
What 2 changes take place when you exercise?
Heart rate increases, rate and depth of breathing increases
Why do changes take place when you exercise?
To increase blood flow to the muscles, increasing the supply of sugar and oxygen, and increasing the rate of removal of CO2
What do muscles store glucose as? What happens to this during exercise?
Glycogen, it’s converted back to glucose
