Q

Glycolysis

A
  • split glucose into 2 pyruvate
  • in cytoplasm of cell, outside mitochondria
  • no oxygen
    1. 2ATP initiate reaction, glucose broken down into 2G3P
    2. G3P reduces NAD+ in cytoplasm to NADH (generates 2ATP for each G3P which is 4)
    3. G3P becomes pyruvate, high energy 3 carbon compound

Q

Pyruvate Oxidation (Pre krebs cycle)

A
  • modify pyruvate to produce Acetyl CoA
  • the matrix of the mitochondria
  • oxygen present
    1. needs to lose one carbon to move into Krebs cycle (loses one CO2)
    2. NAD+ reduced to NADH

Q

Krebs Cycle

A

Acetyl CoA enters mitochondria, series of reactions generate 3NADH from NAD+, 1ATP from ADP, 1FADH2 from FAD. (multiply by 2 for whole glucose)
- CO2 by-product

Q

Oxidative Phosphorylation (ETC)

A

Produces ATP, inner membrane of matrix, oxygen present.
1. Electrons passed down, energy released. Energy pumps hydrogen ions across membrane to Mitochondria Matrix
2. Concentration gradient forces hydrogen through ATP synthase, generates ATP by reduction of ADP.
3. Oxygen final electron acceptor, accepts electron and hydrogen ions, water released as by-product.
