How are French adverbs of manner generally formed?
French adverbs of manner are generally formed by adding -ment to the feminine form of the adverb
léger … légère … légèrement
How is the adverb formed if the adjective ends in a vowel?
If the adjective ends in a vowel, then add -ment to the masculine form.
vrai … vraie … vraiment
How is the adverb formed if the adjective ends in -ant or -ent?
The endings -amment or -emment is added
suffisant … suffisamment
évident …. évidemment
The exception is lent … lentement
What is sometimes done to aid pronunciation, when forming an adverb?
To make them easier to pronounce, some add an accent to the ‘e’ before the ment.
profond … profonde …. profondément
What is the difference between plutôt and plus tôt?
plutôt means rather and plus tôt means earlier
Where are adverbs normally placed?
Adverbs normally go after the verb.
Je parle courramment le français
(I speak French fluently)
In the case of compound tenses, where does the adverb go?
The adverb goes after the auxilliary verb, but before the past participle.
Tu as bien dormi?
With compund tenses, where are adverbs of place and some adverbs of time placed?
Adverbs of place and some adverbs of time are placed after the past participle.
