Advanced Techniques Flashcards
what is the chasing anaesthesia technique?
buccal infiltration first, intrapapillary injection which spreads anaesthetic to palate and then inject the palate so only injection they feel is the buccal infiltration
when is an intraligamental injection used?
when the standard LA has not worked - it is a last option
what is peripress and why is it used
another type of needle used for intraligamentary as less force is required
what does the efficacy of periodontal ligament anaesthesia depend on?
procedure, tooth, resistance to injection, anaesthetic solution
what makes intraligamentary success more likely?
the use of adrenaline
how do you do an intraosseous injection
fit to slow speed handpiece, stab mucosa and start handpiece which drives the needle through mucosa, buccal bone and into cancellous bone
where does the anaesthesia go with intraligamentary injections?
into the PDL then into the bone
what is a topical jet injector
compressed air when you press button it releases LA at high pressure
what are the advantages of a topical jet injector
bleeding diatheses where deep injections contraindicated
what are the alternatives to IDB?
gow gates and akinosi technique
what is the gow gates technique?
open extremely wide, inject high up (point towards condyle), needle hits the condyle and numbs all branches of the mandibular division
what is the akinosi technique
aim higher up, pull cheek to side with mouth shut (trismus), and insert parallel to occlusal plane, needle goes into ramus and all mandibular branches anaesthetised, patient can open slightly and then give injection in standard place
who is the wand commonly used for?
children
what is the modified PDL injection?
place intraligamentary at 6 points and press on peddle
what colour handles are sterilised
black
